How to Know It’s Time to Replace Your Gutters
Jun 08, 2015
Often overlooked, your gutters are an integral part of the functionality of your roof and protecting your house. Gutters and downspouts manage the flow of water and particles away from your house. This, in turn, prevents water from leaking into your basement or impacting your home’s foundation.
Because gutters and downspouts are so important to the protection of your home, it’s important to know when they need to be replaced. Ask yourself these six questions to determine whether your gutters have reached the end of their lifespan.
6 Ways to Know It’s Time to
Replace Your Gutters
1. Is There Standing Water in Your Gutters?
The first sure sign it’s time to replace your gutters is if you find standing water within the gutters. Gutters are shaped to ensure the flow of water and if there is standing water, this means their shape or pitch has been compromised causing water retention. Having standing water in your gutters can cause problems such as mosquito infestation.
2. Are Your Gutters Bent or Do They Have Holes?
If you find your gutters have holes or cracks causing water to leak through, or if you find they are bent or dented, the question to ask yourself is how bad is it. While some holes can be patched, others are past repair. If you’re uncertain, you should call a professional to come out and inspect the condition of your gutters.
3. Is the Paint on Your Home Peeling?
If you find areas on your home where the paint is peeling, if you find wood is corroding in areas behind your gutters, it may be time to replace your gutters. These issues are caused by water splashing or overflowing against the exterior of your home, meaning your gutters are clogged and filling with water.
4. Are Your Gutters Sagging or No Longer Level?
If you find your gutters are sagging away from your home rather than being level, this means your gutters are coming loose where they connect to the house. If this is happening, your gutters could be too worn to be reattached to your home.
5. Are You Finding Screws on the Ground?
If you’re finding small screws around the edge of your house, it’s time to inspect your gutters. If that is where the screws came from and depending on how many screws are missing from your gutter system, it may be time to service your gutters and downspouts to replace the screws.
6. Are There Gaps in Your Gutter Connections?
If you can see gaps between the gutters and the corners or in between the gutters and the fascia boards they are attached to, it may be time to have your gutter system inspected and serviced by a qualified professional. These gaps can cause the water to not flow to the ground correctly.
