Cheat Sheet of Do's and Don't for Roof Inspection
May 26, 2014
Do you live with a self-proclaimed handyperson? Are you thinking of inspecting your roof yourself?
Check out our list of Do’s and Don’ts of Do-It-Yourself. If you have questions about inspecting your roof, call the professionals at H & S Roofing and Gutters.
DO check your living spaces for signs of small damage. Inspect places like rubber seals around the electric service and plumbing vent pipes, air vents and exhaust fan flashing. Also examine shingles, gutters, downspouts, and dormer valleys on the outside of your home for damage.
DON’T ignore damage! The longer you wait to fix a problem, the worse it can get and the more expensive the repairs could be.
DO find the source of the leak in your attic space, if possible. If it rains before roofing professionals can repair the leak, place a bucket with cloth towels underneath the leak to catch falling water. This will absorb water that may splatter out onto the floor. If water is running vertically down a pipe, wrap it up with a rag and place a bucket or pan underneath the pipe to catch additional leakage.
DON’T risk your safety. Repairing your own roof can be dangerous - from climbing the ladder to standing on loose shingles, homeowners should be aware that roof repairs are risky; there may be additional roof damage that is not obvious to the untrained eye. In order to be sure that your roof is properly repaired, call a roofing professional such as H & S Roofing and Gutters of Charlotte, NC to ensure that surface and structural damaged are eradicated.
DO call a roofing specialist if you cannot locate the source of the problem or do not know how to properly repair the roof yourself.
DON’T skip researching your roofing professional. When selecting a company to repair your roof, ask for proof of insurance, business license, and make sure you check the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
