How to Choose a Roofing Contractor

First of all, it is very important that the contractor is licensed and bonded.  Here are other tips on what to look for in a reputable roofing contractor...

Be sure the contractor has been in the roofing business in your area for at least five years.  Longevity at the same office location is also reassuring.  Ask for proof of these items.  If the contracting company is serious about staying in the roofing business, they will likely be affiliated with roofing, contracting and other business associations which promote ethics and reliability, such as Carolina Roofing and Sheet Metal Association, American Subcontractors Association, National Association of Remodeling Contractors, and the National Roofing Association.  Many homeowners have been taken by roofing companies that start up one day, and are gone in a short while.  These associations will not allow these types of companies to be represented in their associations.  Membership in these organizations shows company stability.
Be sure they are affiliated with community organizations such as the local Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and other long-standing business organizations.
Ask for references and for addresses where you can see work done by the contractor that is similar to what you want to have done.
Look for awards and certifications.
Look for a company with "place".  That is, when you call, if you get a real person answering the phone, you'll know that you can visit with a showroom of products.  You'll know they are not a "fly by night" company.
